Environmental, Social and Governance
Environmental Stewardship
Geo Petroleum Ltd is committed to the highest level
of environmental stewardship:
Environments where we work
We will have a positive environmental impact wherever we work, leaving the area in better condition than when we arrived. This will involve a range of activities, from a simple clean-up of areas close to human habitation to the rehabilitation of natural environments damaged by previous human activity. This culture will be extended to all of our contractors and their sub=contractors to ensure that the message is clear and the impact maximized.
Emissions reduction
Geo Petroleum Ltd is committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions and will be fully accountable for this from January, 2021. Our technical office is powered by solar energy, as are many of our local service providers in Zambia.
While we will reduce emissions from our in-field operations to as low as possible we recognise that some level of emissions is unavoidable.
To ensure that our excess emissions are captured effectively we have partnered with Bio Carbon Partners (www.biocarbonpartners.com), a Zambian company that develops forest carbon offset projects in areas of global biodiversity significance to conserve Africa’s wildlife strongholds and deliver powerful community impacts. Geo Petroleum Ltd will purchase carbon credits from Bio Carbon Partners to offset our full emissions.
Social Impact
Geo Petroleum Ltd is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all of its employees and contractors wherever they work. The same level of care is extended to the local communities where we operate.
Geo Petroleum Ltd works to put Zambia first wherever possible, and particularly when it comes to training and development of Zambian nationals. The company has successfully supported programmes at the University of Zambia School of Mines, where a geological laboratory was renovated and supplied with new equipment, the Lukashya Trades Institute in Kasama, Northern Province, and the Mansa Trades Institute in Luapula Province.
Local content will be maximised in all operations within Zambia, with employment of people from the area of operations a priority.
Corporate Governance
Geo Petroleum Ltd is owned by Dr Sixtus Mulenga and Mr George Sokota, both highly respected Zambian citizens who drive a strongly patriotic agenda across the organisation, seeking every opportunity to uplift Zambian people and provide benefit to their country. Under their leadership the company has developed a clear culture of ethical standards and behaviour.
Dr Mulenga runs the day-to-day operations of the company and oversees:
- Government liaison, which is key to ensuring alignment between the company’s vision and the country’s strategic drivers;
- Supervision of operations: Dr Mulenga is an experienced geologist and provides oversight of our operational teams in terms of safety, effectiveness and awareness of the natural and social environments where we work;
- Training and development programmes: Dr Mulenga conceives and drives all the company’s training and development programmes in Zambia, including employment of trainees during operations.
